The Value Creation Hub Concept

It was in the year 2001 that the management of Mitsui had the foresight to recognise the importance of the global trend towards convergence in the global economy. This has been facilitated among others by the emergence of technologies such as the Internet which brought the buyer and the seller closer, reducing the dependencies on the intermediaries. This led to the recognition of the fact that to maintain the same growth path, it will be crucial to provide value added services to customers besides the conventional functions and capabilities. To give concrete shape to this idea the Value Creation Hub was conceptualised and created. The formation of the Value Creation Hub aims at creating sophisticated Supply Chain Management systems which make Mitsui a preferred business partner by our customers .

The Value Creation Hub brought together Mitsui's advanced capabilities in Information Technology (IT), Financial Technology(FT) and Logistic Technology(LT) and offered such capabilities to all the Operating Groups within Mitsui. Prior to the formation of this hub, each group had their own advanced capabilities in IT, FT and LT. Now this function has been centralised and consolidated as a corporate function, which will enable Mitsui in offering comprehensive Business Engineering Services that allow the company to assist its customers in restructuring their operations in response to the evolution in the value chain.

A brief introduction to the key objectives of the three hubs is given below.

The IT Hub has three missions, the first being to work with the Operating Groups to provide IT solutions in Mitsui's Core businesses. The second is to create and foster new business models that will enhance Mitsui's growth potential. The third is to make available some of Mitsui's services such as credit evaluation, international trade financing and monetary settlements in an unbundled form through the use of Information Technology.

The FT Hub has a role of acting as a catalyst for expanding Mitsui's business domain and redefining its business model through the formulation and implementation of various strategies among others Investment Management, Risk Management, Tax Planning, Treasury Management and outsourcing of these specialised services to other companies.

Mitsui has retained a strong Logistics unit enabling it to accumulate LT resources such as information, know how and personnel and make it readily available for meeting client needs. The mission of the LT Hub is to assist the Operating Groups in developing the most sophisticated Supply Chain Management and other value added logistic solutions, and to use the Hub's know how as a base for developing new business opportunities.

Under the Value Creation Hub Management concept, the three hubs collaborate in a dynamic way to create comprehensive business solutions that encompass all three sets of technologies and to provide significant value and bring out the best across all the businesses of Mitsui's Operating Groups with a view to emerging as the most preferred choice of an overall business partner for its customers.
